Urban Burger, Exeter

It seems that every time I return to my home town of Exeter a new burger restaurant has popped up and opened its doors. With a refreshing mix of independent and chain establishments, the burger lover is certainly spoilt for choice in the town centre. Meeting with a friend on a Friday evening I thought it was about time I tried one of these places to see what all the fuss was about. Browsing the online menus and after long deliberation I suggested Urbanburger thinking that its location in the quieter end of town would make it a little less busy on a bustling Friday night.

When we entered the restaurant on Queen Street there was an energetic buzz, with the main restaurant full of lively chat and chirpy customers. Luckily we were able to grab a small table for two in the bar, which was a little quieter but the perfect setting for a catch up dinner. The interior was what you would expect from a modern burger bar, simple but stylish furniture, with the odd black and white skyline photo of New York thrown in for good measure. Even if the décor was a little predictable, it was clean, light and spacious and that’s all that matters.

What really excited me about the restaurant was the intriguing menu. With lots of appealing flavour combinations, and not just the classics or the ‘modern twists’ you find at every other gastro pub or modern dinner,  I had a hard time choosing what to sink my teeth into. There were some really inventive burgers on offer, for example The Elvis, consisting of beef, cheese, homemade peanut butter and bacon, and the Mac & Cheese, featuring breaded deep fried cheesey pasta, but after much deliberation I went for the slightly safer option of The Bolt chicken burger. It’s not just patties they serve here either, there’s a couple tasty looking salads and there’s also a new urban smoked menu packed with ribs, pulled pork and other meaty delights for the carnivores among us.  The veggie options here are really good too, not just the standard bean burger, there’s a cheesey leek concoction and haloumi grill with lots of veggies and tzatziki.

The service was  quick and within 15 minutes our food was on the table. The burger was served in a diner style basket, which looked good but made it hard to use a knife and fork when things got a little messy. The burger itself was really good, the juicy chicken breast was coated in a deliciously spicy seasoning and topped with a sweet mango chutney and cooled down with a good dollop of mayonnaise. The bun was nicely toasted so it had a little crunch but was still soft inside. The only problem we had was that the menu stated the burger as 1 chilli out of 3 on the spicy scale, as a lover of spice I really enjoyed the heat of the burger but my friend Kerry struggled to eat it and found it far too hot which was a shame. The Bolt was £7.95 served without chips and at first I thought this was a little steep without a side,  however when my meal arrived it was a hearty sized portion and I was pleasantly full without accompanying fries.

In all we had a great experience at Ubarnburger, the lively atmosphere, tasty food and friendly service make this restaurant the full package. If you’re looking for a burger joint with a little individuality definitely give this place a try!
